1994 Perth Royal
Monterey History

Monterey Murray Grey Stud was founded with the purchase of a line of females from the Arumvale Stud dispersal in 1976. The quality of these foundation breeders gave us a solid base on which to build the herd. Further select females were added, mainly of The Glen breeding, from the Margaret River, Staple Farm, Illawong and Rockliffe Studs.

We have strived to develop a broad genetic base and in doing so have absorbed the nucleus of two of Western Australia’s foremost Murray Grey herds in Wandena and Koojan Hill. We have also purchased an excellent line of mature cows from the Bundaleer herd. The quality cows from these three herds give us lineage to some of the breed’s elite foundation females.

There have been many sires used over the past 32 years, but those whose early influence stand out most include Wandena Beau, Wandena On Time, Cadella Park Anson, (sold to NZ for $15,000, was later Breed Supreme at NZ Royal and won the NZ Meat and Wool Cup), Cadella Park Longfella (Senior and Grand Champion Perth Royal and sire of many Wandena cows), Orcadia Park Syndicate and Lochaber-Braes Diplomat.

Then came the influence of our first generation of home-bred sires, Marshall, Majestic, Star Chief, Majestic Lad, Tremendous, Starlight, Shiloh and Vegemite Kid who produced (and still continue to produce) quality stock within the herd and throughout Australia, and with semen exported to NZ, UK, USA and South Africa.

Our current senior sire battery, which includes Sundowner, Unit Holder, Steamroller, Stratosphere, Freight Train, Egyptian, Verdict, Gotcha Z36, Magic Lad, Mega Man X10, Whirlwind Y176, Willalooka Xerox, Ultimate Hot Chocolate and Shelldee Stirling, continues to accelerate improvement in our herd and herds across Australia.

Artificial breeding has been used extensively for more than 27 years, backed up by the best walking bulls available. Group Breedplan has been used for many years as a tool to compliment and enhance our visual selection and breeding criteria. More recently, embryo transfer programmes have been conducted on some of our elite breeders with encouraging results.
