This year’s Monterey Murray Grey Centenary Celebration Sale certainly started the year off for the breed with a bang. Featuring a record 100 bulls catalogued, the sale represented the largest offering of registered Murray Grey bulls ever presented for auction anywhere in Australia, as well as the largest single offering of British Breed bulls in WA for many years.

The popularity of the Murray Grey Breed in WA, and in particular the Monterey bloodlines, together with the high quality of the offering, ensured that an impressive near total clearance was achieved. Monterey, in conjunction with Tullibardine and Bundaleer studs, presented 95 bulls on the day, along with 28 Murray Grey stud females. The sale received buying support from 150 registered buyers from across WA and interstate, with some buyers in attendance from South Australia and Queensland.

Landmark auctioneer John Wirth and Elders auctioneer Dennis Roberts agreed that the presentation of the line-up was outstanding and further enhanced the sale outcome. Mr Wirth said that it was a brilliant sale and he was delighted with the results.
“I think you could travel all over Australia and you wouldn’t find as good a line-up of Murray Greys over that number presented in the catalogue,” he said. Mr Roberts agreed with these sentiments.
“Overall it would be pretty hard to find a better number of Murray Grey bulls with consistent quality right throughout the catalogue,” he said.

Top price was the 20mth old 852kg Monterey Unit-Holder Y45 (AI) who sold to the partnership of Melaleuca and Tullibardine studs for $14,500 after a spirited bidding around the ring. Unit Holder Y45 oozed top stud sire potential with his exceptional $Index values well above breed average at +$53 for long fed and +$41 for supermarket. The March-drop bull also showed an excellent blend of figures in the top 1-5% across all traits.
Second top price of the day was Tullibardine Yandilla Y45, selling to Blackwood Murray Grey Stud, Boyup Brook, for $13000.

In attendance at the sale from Condamine, Queensland, Kevin & Trish Vayro, Glengower Murray Grey stud, took home Monterey Sensational for $11,250, in partnership with fellow stud breeders Tim and Pauline Perkins, The Ultimate Murray Grey Stud, Condamine. Sensational was in the top 1% for 200 day growth and scrotal size, and the top 1-5% for 400 & 600 day growth.

South Australian buyers, MB & TJ Parker, Annarooka Murray Greys bid to the $10,000 mark to purchase Monterey Grandstand, a silver son of Monterey Starlight out of Magnolia S90. Grandstand had the second highest EMA of the drop at 127cm2 and was in the top 5-10% for both indexes.

The Murray Grey stud females were certainly not upstaged by their male counterparts when they entered the ring late in the sale. There was a near complete clearance of the 28 females offered, with 26 selling under the hammer at an average of $3871, to a top of $10,000. Taking the top price honours was Monterey Magnolia R75. The 1996 drop grey PTIC cow attracted bidding from all around the ring before being knocked down to Landmark representative Chris Waddingham, taking phone bids from Shell-Dee Murray Grey Stud, Kingaroy, Queensland. The Queensland operation then went on to pay $5000 for Monterey Primrose W14, a 2001 drop heifer who was PTIC to Monterey Egyptian.
