$17,000 MG Bull the Star at Red Hot Monterey Sale
Monterey stud principals, Gary and Julie Buller, with top priced bull, Monterey Gotcha.
Expectations of a red-hot sale were well and truly met at the 10th annual Monterey Murray Grey and Angus sale, where bulls sold to a $17,000 top and records continued to be broken.
A gross of more than $750,000 ensured that this sale was by far the biggest grossing stud Murray Grey sale in Australia and well and truly identified the Monterey stud as one of the nation’s leading producers of stud Murray Grey cattle.
Over 240 registered buyers, including many eastern states buyers, ensured that the demand for the quality genetics on hand was always going to be high.
It was an incredible result, with the Monterey stud offering and selling 39 Murray Grey bulls to average $6744.
Guest vendors Tullibardine and Bundaleer also had 100pc clearances and averaged $6100 and $5367 respectively.
It is a hard task to steal the show at a sale as good as this but the classy bull in lot four did just that when it sold for $17,000.
The bull, Monterey Gotcha, was bought in partnership by Richard and Christine Metcalfe, Melaleuca Murray Grey stud, Many Peaks, and Alastair and Jenny Murray, Tullibardine Murray Grey stud, Narrikup.
Richard and Alastair said it was Gotcha’s structural correctness and scale that appealed to them.
“He had great thickness and fleshing, and his Breedplan data reads well – probably as good a Murray Grey bull as I have seen anywhere,” Richard said.
Alastair said he was a big, upstanding bull.
“I have traveled to the east looking for bulls over the last few years and there is nothing like this bloke over there,” he said.
At 864kg, Gotcha was the heaviest May drop calf in the sale and was sired by Monterey Starlight and out of Bundaleer Opal Q66.
He was in the top 1pc of the breed for 200, 400 and 600 day growth, as well as EMA, carcase weight, scrotal measurement and retail beef yield.
